The Remembrance Run 5K returns to the Phoenix Park on Sunday, November 9th, inviting thousands to come together in a unique event that blends movement with memory. Proudly supported by 123.ie and Evergreen Care, this year’s run carries special resonance as it marks the 10th anniversary of John McHugh’s passing, while also honouring the memory of Ellen Cassidy (24) and Olivia Tuohy (24), two young women whose sudden deaths earlier this year deeply touched the running community in Ireland.

John McHugh, who tragically collapsed and died on the Furze Road in the Phoenix Park on September 19th, 2015, just one day before his 24th birthday, remains a powerful symbol of the spirit of the Remembrance Run. His parents, Noel and Paula McHugh, joined the launch of this year’s event and spoke movingly about the support they’ve received over the past decade.

Noel McHugh said: “September is a tough month for us. We dread coming down and then we get here and you feel the recognition, love, and care from people who have themselves suffered loss in their lives, and that is very powerful.”

“The medals and tributes left at John’s shrine on Furze Road have remained untouched,” said Paula McHugh. “It’s a powerful reminder of the kindness and solidarity of the running community who never forget. The Remembrance Run is a beautiful way to celebrate a life because you’re all doing something together for someone you love.”

This year, all 5,000 participants will pass John McHugh’s shrine in the final kilometre of the route, and all are encouraged to take a moment of reflection that embodies the heart of the Remembrance Run as they pass.

More than just a race, the Remembrance Run 5K is a day of healing, celebration, and remembrance. Participants will experience:

  • Live choirs, music, poetry, and song
  • A Wall of Remembrance to write names and messages
  • A Big Screen displaying submitted photos and tributes
  • A One-Minute Silence before the start
  • A specially composed theme song, I’m Still Close By, co-written by Frank Greally and Noel O’Grady, inspired by Edna O’Brien’s wish to be remembered “fondly”

Whether running, jogging, or walking, participants are encouraged to take part in honour of someone they’ve lost, or simply to stand in solidarity with others.

Proceeds from the event support The Daily Mile Ireland, a 15-minute walk/run initiative promoted by Athletics Ireland in primary schools across Ireland.

Participants can also create a fundraising page to walk or run for their chosen charity. In 2024 over €33,000 was raised for charities close to the hearts of all those involved in the Remembrance Run 5k.

Registration is now open at www.remembrancerun.ie , and early sign-up is encouraged as places are limited.
