The two Ffrench O'Carroll sisters Charlotte and Rebecca qualified for 1500 metres in Belgrade in July at a wet and windy Morton Stadium last night. Charlotte coming off best in a home straight battle to win in 4.29.41 to her sisters 4.30.21 with Ciara Durkan third in 4.32.48. In weather conditions more suited to cross country than track and field Kerry Harty took the field through opening laps of 71s and 72s and the 4m33s target seemed possible. Rebecca took up the running as they approached the bell with Ciara Durkan running strongly alongside the long striding DSD athletes. The race was decided in the home straight and both sisters smashed their previous bests in this Development race which forms part of a series of races organised by Dublin Athletic Board. In the mens 1500 Raheny's Mark Kirwan ran faster than ever before as he clocked 3.55.85. Joe Warne took the field through two opening 61 second laps and had Kirwan and Dennehy for company. With 500 metres to go Kirwan took over and ran strongly over the last 300 metres with Paul Fleming coming through to take second ahead of a tiring Cathal Dennehy. No fewer than 15 athletes set personal bests in these races. Womens 1500; 1 Charlotte Ffrench o'Carroll DSD 4.29.41 2 Rebecca Ffrench O'Carroll DSD 4.30.21 3. Ciara Durkan Skerries 4.32.48 4.
