Two new Irish records at Nenagh today The Woodie’s DIY AAI Games in Nenagh provided some valuable early season competition for athletes today. Kelly Proper from Ferrybank got her season off to the best possible start when she won the long jump with a new Irish indoor record. She opened the competition with a ‘modest’ 6.06m before adding 1cm to her own Irish record when she jumped 6.20m in round 2. Round 3 produced 6.15m, followed by 6.02m. The best was to come in round 5 when she jumped 6.25m to round off a great competition for her. AAI Indoor Games Later in the afternoon she won the 60m with a time of 7.73. AAI Indoor Games The second record of the day came in the men’s triple jump when Niall Counihan from Dooneen smashed the Irish junior record with a jump of 14.30m to place him second in the competition behind Denis Finnegan from UCC who won with 14.39m. Leslie Leung held the record with 14.01m. AAI Indoor Games The men’s high jump was another to excite the attendance at Nenagh. Here Barry Pender from St. Abbans put a very respectable look on his PB when winning with a 2.11m clearance. His previous best indoors was 2.04m, while he has a best of 2.08m outdoors. His efforts to clear 2.14m were not a million miles off target and he will focus his immediate attentions on this height which is the qualifying standard for the World junior championships. AAI Indoor Games Joe Warne from Dohenys won a tactical 1,000m, while Kerry Harty from Newcastle was an impressive winner of the women’s 1k AAI Indoor GamesAAI Indoor Games Junior Brian Gregan from Tallaght, after an absence of over 18 months from competition due to injury, made a long awaited comeback to win the 400m with an impressive 48.58 clocking Meanwhile, Michelle Carey set a new PB for 400m of 53.61 when finishing second in an outdoor meet in Sydney.
