Day 2 of the Woodie’s DIY Irish Indoor championships was another exciting day with plenty of talking points for the appreciative attendance. The day opened with Championships Best Performance in the shot by Kieran Kelly of the Fr. Murphy club with a best of 18.20m, and he followed up with a second effort over 18m – 18.09m. Ailis McSweeney has been gradually returning to her best and showed her younger competitors that she has a lot more to offer. However, she said afterwards that none of the finalists were happy with the start, while Guest winner Anyia Onoura from GBR said she didn’t even want to see the result. Peter Coghlan is another making a successful return to competition. In winning the 60m hurdles he clocked 7.80 to set a new Championship Best Performance, after clocking 7.88 in the heat. The day ended with two competitions that also grabbed the attentions of the crowd. The high jump saw American Jamie Nieto set a new Irish All Comers record of 2.28m The men’s long jump was also an exciting affair as Stephen Fleming set an early lead of 7.25m and then successfully defended that lead in spite of the efforts of Jaroslav Dobrovodsky from Slovakia who came within 1cm and Eoin Hannon a further 1cm back Robert Heffernan received the Performance of the Meet award presented by the Odyssey.
