The Woodie’s DIY junior championships produced another day of superb performances in Nenagh on Sunday. Judging by the sound of rain and wind outside it was a good day to be inside. Laura Cogan, Michael Heery, Sean Kelly A welcome guest at the championships was the Executive Chairman of the Irish Institute of Sport Sean Kelly. He was on hand to congratulate Laura Cogan from Newbridge who smashed her own Irish record in the shot putt. Her winning throw of 13.25m improved on her previous best of 12.95m. She also recorded a throw of 13.11m with her opening throw, with her new record coming in the third round after fouling the second. Eoin Hannon Eoin Hannon from Tullamore Harriers came close to his best of 7.12m with a winning jump of 7.09m in the long jump. He added to his medal tally with victory in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8,52, again very close to his best. Jessie Barr Ferrybank dominated the sprints with Mairead Murphy winning the 60m by the narrowest of margins from Niamh Whelan. The latter responded with victory in the 200m leading a clean sweep of the medals by her club, while Jessie Barr won the 400, with Alanna Quinn from Leevale not too far behind in second. Mairead Murphy added the 60m hurdles from Jessie Barr, while Kelly Proper led a Ferrybank 1-2 in the long jump and Jessie Barr did likewise in the triple jump. Pamela Hughes Pamela Hughes from Westport had a good win in the high jump, equalling her PB with 1.75m, with Grainne Moggan from Brothers Pearse second. Ciaran Collins from Emerald had a good win in the 400m, with Cathal Owens from Leevale finishing just ahead of Finbarr Horgan from Clonmel in a very closely fought battle for second. Men's 400m Kevin Duggan from Mullingar impressed in the 60m, as did Christopher Russell from Ferrybank in the 200m, while Daniel Clifford from Farranfore Maine Valley overcame tough opposition from Dale Kennedy from Ferrybank to win the shot. Men's 100 Robert Fitzsimmons from Tallaght had a comfortable win in the 800m, as did Conor Murphy from Naas in the 1,500m, while Tekea Gebrezgi from Celtic in the 1,500m and Laura Scriven from St, Laurence O’Toole in the 800m impressed in the women’s races.
