While the rain was no where as bad as it was for the National League finals there were still several very heavy downpours as the rainy season continues to hit Irish athletics. As with the League finals there was no stopping the masters championships and several close encounters made for some exciting contests. Amongst the many notable performances was that of John Menton who won the V1 discus with a best effort of 52.00m. Damian Crawford was another to shine in the field with a fine win in the V1 javelin with a best of 56.18m. Geraldine Finnegan was in terrific form in the V2 age group, winning the 100m in 13.96, the shot with 9.97m, the high jump with 1.46m, the 400m in 66.36, and the javelin with 30.06m. Ann Marie Healy went off like a scalded cat in the 800m and built up a big lead. With 300m to go the chasing pack suddenly started to give chase and Helen Leonard, who had earlier won the 3,000m, closed like a train on the leader. However, her challenge petered out in the home straight to leave Healy the winner. Later Healy adopted the same tactics in the 1,500m. Again the field closed on her with a lap to go but she upped the pace again to win the double. Local man Gerard Hensey had a little in hand when winning the 100m from John Corr, with Tomas Griffin third. They met again in the 200m and this time Corr was the victor by the narrowest of margins from Griffin, with Hensey third. Overall it was an excellent day’s competition with cries of ‘Come on Mammy’ and ‘Come on Daddy’ to be heard all over!! Results
