The second day of the Woodie’s DIY Senior championships provided another thrilling day of athletics at Morton Stadium Santry. Amended Results David Gillick made his championships appearance at this distance and cruised to victory in 46.34. The real drama was at the start when Gordon Kennedy false started while the field was on a warning and took no further part. Joanne Cuddihy was literally head and shoulders over everyone when winning the title in a fast 51.86. Unfortunately rain made conditions slippery. And the slippery track caused Derval O’Rourke to fall and slide about fifteen metres after crossing the line in the 100m. Her efforts earned her the silver medal after a storming run by Emily Maher who won in a very close finish. David Campbell again showed tremendous confidence to take out the 800m and then withstand all comers in the home straight to win comfortably from arch rival Thomas Chamney with David McCarthy just a stride behind in third. Kelly Reid had the field well stretched by the bell in the women’s 800m, with Orla Drumm the only one to go with her. The race ended up with a real head to head battle down the home straight with Drumm edging ahead just before the line for a tremendous victory and a new PB. Ciara Durkin ran a great race to finish third knocking two seconds off her PB in the process. Maria McCambridge ran a solo 1,500m to win, with Sonia O’Sullivan getting a tremendous reception as she raced into second place. Kelly Proper made an early return from the European juniors to win the long jump, saying she felt extremely nervous in Hengelo. Eva Massey threw 16.32m to win the shot. The men’s 5,000m came down to a head to head between Gary Murray and Martin Fagan who also raced the previous night in Belgium. Fagan kicked with 250 to go while leading, and while Murray closed again, there was no passing Fagan who won well. Robert Heffernan got proceedings off to a great start when he won the 10k walk comfortably, while Patrick McGrath was a comfortable winner of the hammer. David Campbell’s second race of the afternoon, the final of the 1,500m, was another chance just how confident this guy has become. Liam Reale made most of the running and led into the straight with Campbell cruising and Colm Rooney running strongly on the outside. Campbell was the strongest, crossing the line to record a rare 800m 1,500m double, with Rooney running a great race for second. Paul Hession was another to return to the track and then steam rolled the 100m field to win in 10.45, while Derval O’Rourke, none the worse for her ‘slip’ in the 100m, easily retained her 100m hurdles title. 8008
