Joanne Cuddihy produced a superb new personal best at the Woodie's National Track and Field championships in the Morton Stadium today when winning the 200 metres in 23.33 into a slight headwind of -1.0. In her specialist 400 metres Joanne had an easy qualification in 54.84 and looks set for a double when the championships resume tomorrow. AAA's champion in the hammer last week in Manchester Eileen O'Keeffe duly won her event today and in the process set a new championship best performance of 67.80 metres. The gruelling 10,000 metres was won by national cross country champion Vinnie Mulvey in 29.58.35. There was a fascinating duel in the men's long jump with Stephen Fleming taking the title in the last round with 7.41 metres ( +0.1 ) from Darragh O'Farrell 7.40 metres ( +0.1 ) The women's triple jump was another close affair with Mary McLoone 12.38 metres (+0.0 ) winning from Sarah Barry 12.34 metres (+1.8 ) Other winners: 200 metres Paul Brizzel 21.33 ( -1.0 ) 3000 steeplechase Eugene O'Neill 8.56.62 High Jump Mark Crowley 2.10 metres Shot Putt John Leahy 15.77 metres Pole Vault Claire Wilkinson 2.70 metres Discus Renata Katewicz 46.33 metres Javelin Laura Kerr 47.62 metres From the heats today some exciting races are in prospect tomorrow : David Gillick coasted to a heat win in the 400 metres in 47.38 but also impressive were Paul McKee and David McCarthy; Alistair Cragg and Liam Reale dominated their 1500 metres heats; a battle royal is anticipated in the 800 metres from Thomas Chamney and David Campbell. Sunday's programme commences at 11.45 with the 10,000 metres walk followed by the heats of the 100 metres at 13.15 with the final event scheduled for 16.45 National Track and Field Day 1 Results
