Eileen O’Keeffe has clearly benefited from her silver medal performance at the World University Games and she produced a confident performance on the fourth day of the World championships in Osaka. With the qualifying standard for the hammer set at 71m she needed only one throw to ensure a place in the final. That single throw was measured at 71.07m and the only time she has thrown further was at the national championships. 


Paul Hession had a busy day, finishing second in the first round of the 200m during the morning session and he followed up by winning his second round heat later n the day. He clocked 20.46 in his first race, while 20.50 was good enough to win his second race and put him into the semi final tomorrow. 

David Gillick was another in top form finishing third in his heat of the 400m in a time of 45.35. He contests the semi final tomorrow. 

Derval O’Rourke’s interest in the championships ended with an eight place finish in the semi final of the 100m hurdles in a time of 12.98.
