The one sure thing that Eileen O’Keeffe has done over the past few weeks is to show that success on the world stage is going to happen sooner rather than later. Today, in the hammer final on Day 6 of the World championships in Osaka, Eileen threw 70.93m with her opening round, putting her into fourth place in the competition. However, slight technical faults in subsequent rounds meant she was unable to capitalise on her opener. That opening throw was her best of the competition and earned her a sixth place finish that left her absolutely delighted and the knowledge that she can mix it with the best in the world. Well done Eileen.

Illness over the past week meant David Campbell could not possibly be at his best for the opening heats of the 800m. However, he put in a superb performance, and, while not qualifying for the next round, clocked his second fastest time ever when finishing seventh in 1:46.47.

Alistair Cragg had a poor run in the heats of the 5,000m, finishing 13th in 13:59.45. Afterwards he said the high humidity affected his performance.
