Disappointment for Gregan in World Final There was huge disappointment for Tallaght athlete Brian Gregan in the final of the 400m at the World Junior Championships in Poland tonight.
Gregan was disqualified in the final for a lane infringement as officials claimed he had crossed the running line during the final. The 18-year-old finished in 5th in the final in a time of 46.60, a new Irish Junior Record, but was later disqualified. The Irish team lodged an appeal on the disqualification but after some deliberation the verdict was upheld. Gareth Devlin, High Performance Manager with Athletics Ireland said, “This is very disappointing for Brian after running the race of his life in a World Final and having a fantastic Championships on the whole, but we must abide by the rules and Brian will be back again.” It was also a disappointing day for the other Irish in action. Pamela Hughes was unable to find her form in the final of the High Jump, the Westport AC athlete failed in her attempts at 1.78m. Germany’s Kimberley Jess eventually won the event with a jump of 1.86m. Mairead Murphy and Sandra Lawlor both failed to make it out their heat in the 100m hurdles. Murphy finished 6th in a time of 14.21, almost a second outside qualifying, while Celbridge’s Sandra Lawlor struggled in her heat and finished 8th in 14.58. It is a busy day for the Irish tomorrow in Poland. Laois athlete Barry Pender is in the final of the High Jump, Paul Fitzpatrick will take on a tough field in the final of the men’s 10K Walk, while Sara-Louise Treacy and Ciara Mageean will hoping to progress from their heats of the 1,500m.
