The fourth World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge was held in conjunction with the Jungfrau Marathon. Around 4,200 athletes from 50 different countries set off from Interlaken, Switzerland, for the 42.195 km run to the finish at the foot of the Eiger, 1,839 metres above the town. The first 25 km is on fairly flat and gently climbing road with the serious mountain climb compressed into the last 17 km. As soon as the climbing got under way, New Zealand’s Jonathan Wyatt started pulling the early leaders back. He finished three minutes ahead of Italy’s Hermann Achmuller (2:18 marathon) with another Italian Gerd Frick a further minute adrift in 3rd place. In the women’s race, Anita Hakenstad Evertsen of Norway won by 8 minutes, just less than two minutes outside the course record. Evertsen has a marathon best time of 2:30 in Berlin in 1997. The Russians Elina Kaledina and Jeanna Malkova finished 2nd and 3rd. Aisling Coppinger finished 52nd woman overall.
