Day 1 report (Wednesday) Day one at the world military games in Hyderabad saw a host of the worlds top athletes in action. Osaka,silver medallist Kozmus of Slovenia continued his fine run of form winning the mens hammer final. Also in action today was of Abdulla of Qatar who blazed his way to the mens 100m finals slowing up in a time of 10.36 seconds. There were also some respectable performances from the Irish Defence forces athletes. The day started off with Lt Ruaidhri Kedney running in heat four of the 400m. Unfortunately Ruaidhri failed to progress to the semi finals however he ran a personal best performance of 51.45 seconds finishing sixth. There was disappointment for former national champion Pte Stephen McDonnell from Donegal was forced to pull out of the 400m/h due to a hamstring strain. Next on track was Lt James Ledingham in the 800m, who despite running close to his personal best with 1,56.64 failed to progress in a blisteringly fast third heat led out by Osaka finalist Justus Koech of Kenya. The highlight off the day was a 1,53.61 personal best performance by Pte Alan O Brien in heat four of the 800m. Alans time secured himself a fastest losers spot for tomorrows semi at 17:30. The semi final saw Alan come in sixth place with a time of 1:54.21 in the mid day sun in a very well contested semi final won by Kenyan Justus Koech. These performances come on the back of a magnificent season for the west Waterford athlete, having already finished fifth in the Welsh championships and qualifying for the national senior final. Both Ptes Noel Kelly and Colin Meritt acquitted themselves well in the heats of the 5000m, however both athletes failed to qualify in what was an extremely well contested field. Pte David Doherty also competed in the 1500m but failed to qualify among tough competition.
