The records have continued to fall across the 2025 season with a host of new Irish records now ratified by the Technical Committee (up to June 15th).
Among the highlights were Peter Lynch’s new marathon record, Mark English lowering his own 800m record, and Niamh Fogarty breaking the long standing discus record.
Peter Lynch Breaks Irish Senior Marathon Record
Racing in the Düsseldorf Marathon in Germany, the 27-year-old clocked a time of 2:09:36, which takes six seconds off the previous record held by Hiko Tonosa (Dundrum South Dublin AC) since the Dublin Marathon last October.
Lynch finished third in the race which was won by Alex Meier (USA) in 2:08.32. He paced his effort impressively, going through 10k in 30:45 and halfway in 1:04:49, finishing strongly to break the record.
Mark English Breaks Irish 800m Record Again
English looked as composed as ever throughout the opening 400 meters, and stayed on strongly down the home straight to clock the new record time of 1:44.34, bettering his previous best of 1:44.53 which he set in Madrid last June.
The Finn Valley athlete has continued to build on the indoor form which saw him claim European bronze back in March, a result which now sees him trail only Sonia O’Sullivan in Ireland’s all-time medal tally at major championships.
Niamh Fogarty Breaks Irish Discus Record
The Westmeath native threw a best of 58.40 metres at the OK Throws Series meeting in the USA to break Patricia Walsh’s national record (57.60m) that had stood for 41 years.
The 25-year-old has been in excellent form this season, representing Ireland at the European Throwing Cup and European Team Championships.
