More exciting performances by Irish athletes abroad The indoor season is gradually moving into full swing and yesterday a string of top class performances surely whets the appetite for the European championships in Birmingham at the start of March. After coming so close to breaking the four minute mile last weekend Thomas Chamney was back in action again, this time dropping back in distance to the 800m, his main event. Running on his home track in Notre Dame he pulverised the opposition to win in a time of 1:47.82, a new indoor PB for him. He finished the race well clear and would surely have broken the Irish record had he been stretched a bit more. That indoor record is held by Daniel Caulfield with a time of 1:47.21. James Nolan made the trip to Stuttgart and can be well pleased with his performance. He led the field through the 1,200m mark in 2:56.40 and then got involved in a terrific charge to the line that saw him edged into fifth in 3:41.03. Gareth Turnbull was in action at the Armory in New York and neatly dipped under 4 minutes as he finished second in the mile with a time of 3:58.88. His main focus is on the 3,000m for Birmingham.
