Combined Eventers in Good Form

Ireland’s Combined Events athletes have been in good form ahead of the GloHealth National Combined Events take place on May 28/29 with a number of athletes keen to make their mark.

Michael Bowler (Kilkenny City Harriers) was third in the decathlon at the England Athletics Championships in Bedford on May 14/15 with a score of 6,803 points which also saw him place second in the British Universities – both events were combined.

Bowler isn’t entered in the national championships where it looks likely being a duel between Shane Aston (Trim) and Mark Rogers (St Peters).

A number of young athletes have also been in fine form and below is a report on the Somerset Schools & County AA Combined Events Championships.

CE Stars in Somerset

A team of four multi eventers travelled to the Somerset Schools & County AA Combined Events Championships at Millfield School. The team included a sister and two brothers as well as two athletes looking for qualification totals for the European Youths Championships in Georgia.

Daniel Ryan (Moycarkey Coolcroo AC) scored a tremendous total of 6585 over the two day u18 Decathlon to take gold and exceed the European Youth qualifier of 6400. Shannon Sheehy (Cusinstown AC) also stepped up to a fabulous total of 5041 for gold in the u18 Heptathlon and also exceeding the European Youths qualifier of 4800.

Well done to both Shannon and Daniel for your wins and achieving your Youth Heptathlon and Decathlon standards. Next up in the Junior girls and representing her school. Ursuline Convent Thurles, was Anna Ryan in the pentathlon. Anna scored a super 2354 points in the most competitive group of the day to place 13th overall for the south east region.

Anna was followed by Dillon Ryan representing Moycarkey Coolcroo AC in the Minor boys quadathlon. This group was the largest of the day with 40 boys competing. Nonetheless Dillon prevailed and led the group home to take a wonderful gold with 56 points to spare of his nearest rival. Kate O’Connor (St Gerard’s AC) competed but unfortunately had to withdraw from the Heptathlon after three events.

Well done to all athletes, coaches and parents who travelled to compete and support over the two days of competition in Somerset. Congrats to  those who have achieved the standards for the combined events at the European Youths Championships in Georgia. If selected it will be the first time in a long time since Ireland had two multi eventers at a European champs.
