Hoffa Takes American Trophy. The American Trophy was donated to the Cork City Sports Committee by the American Ambassador to Ireland in 1951 and is awarded each year to the athlete with the most outstanding performance at the Sports as judged by a panel of sports journalists from the national press. There seemed little doubt that the reigning World Indoor champion, Reese Hoffa, who produced his 12th consecutive 21m. competition of 2007 thanks to another massive efffort of 21.47 to win at the Area Permit Meet in Cork would be the unanimous choice. The winning putt on his penultimate attempt was one of the many highlights of the 56th. Cork City Sports which also included notable home victories by Paul Hession, Mary Cullen, Joanne Cuddihy and David Campbell. The 29 year old who has an outdoor personal best of 21.96m (22.11 indoors) set when coming 2nd. at the 2006 U.S. championships came to Cork a week after having won this year's U.S. championships(21.47) and a 21.77 victory at the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava midweek. The World champion's series in Cork was 20.95,x,x,20.90, 21.47,x. Despite many of the best athletes from the USA competing in Cork over the years, Hoffa is only the fourth American to win the accolade following Sidney Maree(1982), Mary Slaney(1985) and Grace Upshaw (2003). The latter was this time also victorious in an epic long jump contest winning on countback from Jade Johnson (England) and Karen Mey (RSA).
