Team Ireland rounded out an impressive World Athletics U20 Championships campaign in Eugene, Oregon, with three top-six finishes, a National U20 Record and a host of personal best performances among the highlights at Hayward Field.
Siún Quinn (Brothers Pearse AC) and Ethan Dewhirst (Tír Chonaill AC) brought Ireland’s championships to a close with superb performances in their respective finals.
Dewhirst produced an excellent run from the inside lane in the men’s 400m hurdles final, finishing strongly to cross in 51.05 and secure fifth place in the world. He had progressed impressively through the rounds, clocking 50.73 in his heat before improving to 50.53 to secure automatic qualification from his semi-final.
Quinn also delivered when it mattered most in the women’s high jump final. Having safely negotiated qualification with a 1.79m clearance, the Brothers Pearse AC athlete produced a lifetime best of 1.87m to finish sixth in the world.
Ireland’s other top-six finish came courtesy of Seamus Clarke (Moy Valley AC) in the men’s 5000m Race Walk. Clarke produced one of the standout Irish performances of the championships, finishing fifth in the world in a National U20 Record of 19:28.27, taking more than 17 seconds off his previous best. Matthew Newell also competed strongly in the final, finishing 22nd in 20:26.11.
There were further impressive performances in the 400m hurdles, with Ellis McHugh (Ferrybank AC) clocking a 58.49 PB in her semi-final to finish 15th overall, while Des O’Neill (Raheny Shamrock AC) signed off his campaign with a 51.28 PB in the men’s semi-finals.
Eoin O’Callaghan (Bandon AC) completed a demanding two days of decathlon competition with a personal best total of 7,159 points to finish 19th overall. His standout performances included a season’s best 6.57m in the long jump and a 54.96m PB in the javelin.
Dubem Amah (Tallaght AC) also enjoyed a strong championship, clocking a 20.96 PB in the opening round of the men’s 200m before progressing to the semi-finals and finishing 14th overall.
Pia Langton (Kilkenny City Harriers) progressed to the women’s 800m semi-finals, while Saoirse Fitzgerald (Lucan Harriers), Orlaith Mannion (South Galway AC), Gemma Galvin (Ennis Track), Dearbhla Allen (St Peter’s AC) and Cillian Gleeson (Celbridge AC) all gained valuable experience competing on the world stage.
Ireland’s relay squads also produced encouraging performances, with the women’s 4x400m team clocking 3:40.06, while the men’s 4x100m squad recorded 40.39 to finish fourth in their heat, narrowly missing out on progression.
