Alistair Cragg has now put the spotlight on himself for the European 5000 metres in Gothenburg after a new personal best of 13.08.97 in New York on Saturday night.Alistair finished 5th in a world-class field behind four Kenyans.The time was a four seconds improvement on his previous best of 13.12.74 and is the fastest in Europe this year and would have ranked him 2nd in Europe in 2005.Somewhat off the pace in New York were Roisin McGettigan 4.19.57 for 11th in the 1500 metres while Marie Davenport was 6th in the 5000 metres in 15.44.33 In Uden, Holland Joanne Cuddihy improved once again on her 400 metres best with a winning time of 52.40 and a sub 52 secs beckons.Back from injury Paul Hession had a fabulous start to the season with a close 2nd in the 200 metres in 20.98 (-1.6 ) and a 3rd in the 100 metres in 10.52 ( 0.0 ). Ciara Sheehy improved on her first outing during the week by winning the 200 metres in 23.72 ( -0.3 ) and finishing 3rd in the 100 metres in 11.94 ( 0.0 ) Michelle Carey had a busy night also in Uden winning the 400 metres hurdles in an excellent 57.49 and running the flat 400 in 54.11 for 5th place. A great breakthrough came in the men's 800 metres from David Campbell as he won in a fine new pb of 1.48.88. Another pb on a wonderful series of Irish performances was 2nd in the women's 1500 metres from Linda Byrne in 4.24.18. Azmera Gebrezgi wa 4th in 4.30.89. In Zaragoza David Gillick made his seasonal debut and finished 3rd overall in the 400 metres in 47.03. The high winds militated against fast times and a substantial improvement is expected next time out.Deirdre Ryan was 7th in the high jump with 1.79 metres. At the Flanders meeting in Belgium Sinead Delahunty Evans won the 1500 metres in a fast 4.10.11 and well inside the European qualifying standard. James Nolan bounced back from a poor run in Hengelo on Sunday to an excellent 4th in the 1500 metres at the Bislett Games in Oslo on Friday finishing 4th in 3.38.51. James has now stated that his immediate target is the A standard of 3.36.20 for the world champinships. Karen Shinkins will be disappointed with her 8th place in the 400 metres in 52.86 some way behind her sub 52 secs in Belem recently. Paul McKee had a nice double in the British League in Bedford on Saturday winning the 100 metres in 10.66 ( +1.8 ) and the 400 metres in 47.33. Rosemary Ryan won the 3000 metres in Manchester in 9.27.56
