Jason Smyth's Record Run in Mannheim

Jason Smyth, Derry booked his place for the world junior athletics championships in Beijing when running 10.61 ( +1.0 ) for the 100 metres in Mannheim tonight. His time was well inside the qualifying standard of 10.74 but even more significantly equalled the longstanding national junior record of Derek O'Connor set in 1983. Jason runs in the 200 metres tomorrow and is well capable of achieving the Beijing standard of 21.64. Amy Foster was narrowly outside the Beijing standard of 11.90 in her 100 heat where she finished 2nd in 11.93 (+0.4 ) With some good performances over 200 Amy has a chance of achieving the standard of 24.30 tomorrow. In Gothenburg today a wonderful breakthrough was made by Chris Quinn, Lagan Valley who qualified for the 400 metres hurdles in Beijing with a new personal best of 53.23.Chris has had a fine series of wins leading up to this achievement with victories in the Irish Schools' and national juniors.
