Juveniles shine on Day 1 in Tullamore
The juveniles, much like the sun, were shining in Tullamore on Day 1 of the Irish Life Health Juvenile Championships.
There was a host of new championship best performances set along with some great competition.
In his last summer as a juvenile, Daniel Ryan (Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C.) set a new championship best and record in the boys U19 110m Hurdles with a time of 14.48 seconds and later went on to win the shot put with a best of 14.47m.
There was an impressive javelin throw in the U14 girls with a new record by Amy Whelan (Liscarroll) of 41.53.
The teak tough Aimee Hayde (Newport) ground down Ailbhe Doherty (Ennis Track) in the U15 girls’ 800m to win in a new championship best of 2:15.63. Doherty had to settle for silver on this occasion with 2:18.96.
There were a number of good 800m races – amongst them was Molly Brown (MSB) winning the U17 girls in 2:16.64 and Louis O’Loughlin (Donore Harriers) powering to victory in the U17 boys in 1:55.71
Craig Giles (Clonliffe Harriers) and Conor O’Driscoll (Leevale) were tactically impressive in their respective U18 and U19 800m races. Giles struck gold in 1:56.61 with O’Driscoll winning in 1:57.22.
Laura Nicholson (Bandon) won the U18 2,000m steeplechase in 6:58.38, smashing the old best of 7:20.70 by Ciara Cummins. Alannah Neff (Leevale) in second was also well under the old record with 7:09.94.
