The Kit Kat Irish Schools' track and field championships in Tullamore on Saturday were blessed with splendid weather and the usual raft of outstanding performances.Pity the sprinters though who had to overcome an adverse breeze.Consequent times do not give a true reflection of performances. Notwithstanding that it was an uplifting day in Paddy Larkin's home on Saturday. From such a plethora of events it is hard to give a synopsis of the day's highlights but here goes: Hugely impressive is the only description to relative newcomer to this level of the sport Brian Gregan ( born 31st December 1989! ) who smashed the long-standing 400 metres intermediate record with 48.65 which is just outside the standard of 48.50 for the 2007 European junior championships; Kelly Proper broke the national junior record for the long jump with 6.08 metres and we are certain to see that record improving as the year progresses David McCarthy whose aim this year is to qualify for the world junior championships in Beijing front ran the senior 800 metres to win easily in 1.52.88; A fine double for Amy Foster in the 100 and 200 metres with the latter a particulary exciting and high quality race against Mairead Murphy with both of these athletes having genuine aspirations for Beijing Jason Smyth another double in the 100 and 200 with the latter a most impressive run; Niamh Whelan small in stature but stunningly effective in winning thwe 100 metres 12.25 and 200 metres 25.13 in the intermediate girls; Daire Bermingham front ran the senior 1500 metres to win impressively in 3.55.17 ; catching the eye with an impressive double was Niall Tuohy in the 800 metres easing off in 1.55.58 and 3.59.57 for a controlled win in the 1500 metres; national junior cross country champion Stephen Scullion posted a fine win in the 2000 metres steeplechase in 5.58.36 and one feels certain that he will be an athlete aiming for the European junior standard ( 9.10.00 ) for 2007;Harriet Crosse an excellent 300 metres in 39.86; Kalyn Sheehan 42.70 for the 300 metres hurdles and 11.81 for the 80 metres hurdles; Ciara Cronin again all the way winner of the 1500 metres intermediate in 4.35.37. And the overriding thought that strikes me how can Waterford provide such a glittering list of stars. Two splendid 1500 metres racers organised by the Irish Milers Club were held during the meeting. Aoife Byrne won the women's event in a new personal best of 4.15.2 and dare we hope that this talented runner will get a full season injury free. A fine men's race saw Mark Christie emerge as winner in 3.44.63 from Gary Murray 3.45.14 and a swift 3.45 .55 from Mark Kenneally in 3rd. Postscript:This battle-worn scribe is not easily impressed anymore with athletic fame but a brief interlude in the hospitality room in Tullamore where luminaries of the sport were casually conversing impressed me hugely. And the athletes were Sonia O'Sullivan, Marcus O'Sullivan, Eamonn Coghlan and a welcome sight Donie Walsh. The latter incidentally for you young folk could have as effectively filled in his day the Mardyke as the aforementioned superstars.
