The Irish Life Health Masters Track & Field Championships get underway this weekend (Saturday 13th August 2022) in Tullamore from 10am. The Irish Masters Athletes have had stellar success this season both on home soil and at international competition, with medal hauls from both the European Championships and World Championships already this year.
In sprint action Michael Lynch (An Riocht AC) returns to the MO35 100m to defend his Championship title. While Michelle Metcalfe (Tallaght AC) moves to the 100m WO40 competition this year and will be looking to join the podium after a strong silver medal winning performance at last years championships.
With over 90 entries, it will be a tough contest in the 800m competition. Mark O’Shea (Drogheda & District AC) will be one to watch in the MO50 800m, after his incredible performance at the World Championships in July secured him a gold medal.
Bronwen McDonald (St L O’Toole AC) will be looking to go one further in the WO35 800m, McDonald was just shy of the top spot at last year’s championships, but in the absence of Michelle Cox will be on the hunt for gold medal glory.
Eileen Kenny (Athlone AC) had a series of stellar world championship performances, winning silver medals in the WO70 6KM Cross Country and 10K, she returns to Tullamore to defend her WO70 3,000m Championship title.
In the men’s 5,000m Richard Mullins (St Abbans AC) will look to defend his MO75 Championship title. Mullins had a strong 21:21.01 performance last year and will be looking produce another strong performance this weekend.
Erika Jouzapaithe (Blackrock Louth AC) is back to defend her Jump WO40 Championship titles, as she takes to the long jump, high jump and triple jump competitions. Jouzapaithe reached 1.50m at last year’s High Jump Championship, the highest reached on the day.
After his double gold medal winning performances at the World Masters Championships last month, John Dwyer (Templemore Ac) returns to the Hammer and Discus competition. Dwyer will be looking to defend his Hammer Championship title after a strong 49.20m throw last year, he will be looking to get closer to his PB of 53.63m on Sunday.
