Woodie's DIY Junior and Under 23 Track And Field Championships

The Woodie’s DIY Junior and Under 23 track and field championships are underway in Tullamore. A bright sunny day with a strong cross wind has not affected sprinters so far, with some excellent performances all round. Results In the 200m’s Niamh Whelan easily added to he 100m win in a time of 24.15, with Steffi Creamer second in 24.64 and a legal wind. Derek Duff had an equally easy win in the under 23 200m in a time of 21.91 from Nick Hogan in 22.23 and a legal wind. Kalyn Sheehan from Ferrybank powered her way to victory in the junior 400m in a time of 56.58, with Ciara Everard second in 57.13, and Sinead Kelly from St. Abban’s third in 57.21. Curtis Woods was celelbrating victory in the junior 400m a long way out. His time was 48.98, with Billy Ryan from Ferrybank second in 49.15, and Jason Harvey from Lagan Valley third in 49.33. Strbane athletes dominated the junior javelin with Dan Mullin winning from clubmates Conor McLaughlin and Sean McBride. ----- Kelly Proper continued her great form at Tullamore by adding the 200m to her 100m title. She clocked 24.38, with Claire Brady second in 24.92. Again there was a legal -2.5 wind. And Kelly was on form again in the long jump, winning with a best of 6.26 and a legal wind of +1.0. David Quilligan from Leevale won the junior long jump with 6.44. Ciaran O’Cathain was an easy winner of the 110m hurdles in 15.27 Nick Hogan from Dundrum South Dublin won the under 23 400m in good style in a time of 48.97, with Chris Quinn from Lagan Valley second in 49.36. After a slow early 1,500m the pace increased when Kevin Moriarty from Raheny Shamrock went for home with just under two laps remaining. However, he was passed by eventual winner Eoin Everard with 250m to go and hewon in a time of 4:04.50, while Tommy Carroll from North Sligo won the junior 1,500m in 3:59.45. Brian Gregan from Tallaght dropped down a distance to tackle the junior 200m and he ran strongly to win in 21.75 from Craig Lynch from Shercock in 21.94. Wind was +2.5. Ian Rogers won the junior pole vault with a best of 4.20, with Richard Whyte second with 3.80. Daniel Clifford from Farranfore Maine Valley won the junior discus with 46.39, while Pawel Hazler from Leevale won the under 23 discus with 47.33. ------ Kelly Proper from Ferrybank has been flying on the track so far and she added another title to her string with victory in the 100m in a time of 11.69, with Clare Brady from Cellbridge second in 11.81, and Amy Foster third in 11.84. The wind was a legal +0.7. Niamh Whelan from Ferrybank was a good winner of the junior 100m in 11.98, with Hannah Lewis second in 12.27 and Steffi Creaner from Celtic third in 12.28. Wind was -0.6. David O’Shea from Dooneen won the under 23 100m in 10.78, the same time as second placed Derek Duff from Leevale, with Kevin Duggan from Mullingar third in 10.92. Wind was +1.9. The junior men’s 100m went to Craig Lynch from Shercock in 11.12, with Jonathan Holmes from KCH second in 11.29 and Scott Hamilton from Regent House third in 11.33. A whisker separated Joe Warne from Doheny’s from Kevin McCloy from Shercock in the under 23 800m, 1:57.28 – 1:57.35, with Andrew Connick from Slaney Olympic third. There was even less between junior winner Anthony Lieghio from Tallaght and Mark Peterson from North Down in the junior 800m – 1:56.70 – 1:56.71. Mark McDonald from Clonliffe was third in 1:57.61. Ciara Mageean from City of Lisburn gave a display of front running to win the junior 800m in 2:10.70 from clubmate Rachel Gibson in 2:17.28. In the field events Gerard Kelly from Castlebar won the junior hammer with 55.42; Nikita Savage from Youghal the junior pole vault with 2.60m; Eoin Kelly from St. Abban’s the under 23 triple jump with 13.96; Francis Egan from St. Abban’s won the junior triple jump with 13.34; Claire Fitzgerald from Tralee Harriers won the junior shot with 12.69; Pamela Hughes from Westport won the junior high jump with 1.75; Padraaig White from UCD won the under 23 hammer with 57.91; Olivia McDonald from St. Peter’s won the junior javelin with 38.08. The walks were won by Paul Fitzpatrick from Shercock in 22:13.46; Michael doyle from Tara in 23:19.06; Nicola Alcorn from Finn Valley in 17:02.64; Laura Reynolds from Mohill in 14:24.39.
