Irish schools cross team set for Wales test

The SIAB Cross Country International will take place at Margam Park near Port Talbot tomorrow (March 25) with strong Irish teams in contention.

The SIAB races will host competition between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in the junior and intermediate age groups.

The fields will be strong including national schools champions from each of the nations where Sarah Healy (Holy Child Killiney) will lead the intermediate girls team against Olivia Mason for England, Cera Gemmell for Scotland and Mia Roberts for Wales.

Aimee Hayde (St Mary’s Newport) and Sean Donoghue (St Declan’s Cabra) will lead the junior teams with Darragh McElhinney (Colaiste Pobail, Bheanntrai) starring for the intermediates. McElhinney won the 1500m on the track at the SIAB schools international and will be looking for another strong showing.

With eight runners per team there will be 32 Irish athletes in action in Wales with weather conditions much improved from midweek. This is good reward for a long cross country season before transitioning to the track in their zones and districts in the coming weeks.
