Another stellar year for Irish athletics has seen 78 national records fall over the course of the season.
Some of the highlights included:
Aug 18th – Israel Olatunde 100m
Israel Olatunde (Tallaght AC) has lowered his own Irish 100m record with a stunning 10.12 at the NEB Open in London.
The time saw Olatunde cross the finish in first place ahead of the British pair of Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake and Stephen Baffour into second and third. Today’s performance see’s Olatunde take 0.05 off his previous national record which was set in the final of the European Athletics Championships in Munich back in 2022.
July 20th – Nick Griggs 3000m (U23)
Griggs took his place in a stacked men’s 3000m at the Diamond League in London to post a personal best performance in the race, smashing his own Irish U23 record to cross in 7:36.59 PB (10th) to move to 4th on the Irish all time list.
June 30th – Rhasidat Adeleke 100m
Rhasidat Adeleke headlined the final day of the 123.ie National Senior Track and Field Championships with a record-breaking 100m display in front of a bumper crowd at Morton Stadium.
The Tallaght AC athlete clocked a new Irish record of 11.13 (+0.7m/s) on her way to gold, finishing ahead of defending champion Sarah Lavin of Emerald AC in 11.37.
Adeleke’s time bettered the previous record of 11.27 held set by Lavin last year and completes a remarkable CV for the 21-year-old who now holds every Irish sprint record, indoors and outdoors, from 60m to 400m.
June 21st – Mark English 800m
Mark English (Finn Valley AC) lowered his own Irish 800m national record while competing at the Meeting Madrid. The 31-year-old qualified doctor clocked a time of 1:44.53 to finish fourth in a high-quality race won by Belgium’s Elliot Crestan in 1:44.28
May 25th – Ciara Mageean 800m
Ciara Mageean opened her 2024 season in sensational fashion, lowering her own Irish senior 800m record at the British Milers Club meet in Manchester.
The Portaferry native crossed the line in 1:58.51 to knock well over half a second off her previous record of 1:59.27 which she had set at the same meet on this weekend last year.
May 24th – Nicola Tuthill Hammer
Nicola Tuthill (UCD AC) become just the second Irish woman to ever throw beyond 70 metres in the Hammer Throw back in May.
Competing at the P-T-S Meeting in Šamorín, Slovakia, the 20-year-old from Cork threw a best of 70.32m to finish second in the competition.
April 13th – Elizabeth Ndudi Long Jump
Elizabeth Ndudi (Dundrum South Dublin AC) brok the National Senior Long Jump record in Illinois back in April.
Competing at the Gary Wieneke Memorial, Ndudi was representing the University of Illinois where she is currently studying Business.
The European U20 champion jumped a best of 6.68m in the first round and showed impressive consistency jumping 6.67m later in the competition.
