‘Best day of my life’ – Scullion stars in Dublin

Stephen Scullion (Clonliffe Harriers) starred at the KBC Dublin marathon with a second-place finish overall in 2:12:01 to win the national title in perfect conditions today (October 27).

Scullion, who has trained at altitude for the last three years fulltime in Flagstaff, Arizona, described it as the ‘best day of my life’ bettering his old pb of 2:14:34 which he set in Houston last January. The run puts him in a very good position for qualification for the Tokyo Olympics this summer.

It was a day of personal bests in ideal marathon conditions with Mick Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock) second in a new best of 2:13:19 and Hugh Armstrong (Ballina) third on his debut in 2:14:22 – a new Mayo record.

Aoife Cooke (Eagle AC) ran an impressive pb of 2:32:34 (2:46:37 was her previous best in Amsterdam in 2017) to win the women’s national title. She put the result down to ‘a lot of miles, a lot of hard training.’

Ann-Marie McGlynn (Letterkenny) had to settle for second in a new pb of 2:32:54 with Gladys Ganiel (North Belfast Harriers) third in 2:36:42
