Brendan Boyce (Finn Valley AC) has secured a top 24 finish in the 35k Race Walk at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest this morning (Aug 24th).
Boyce, who was competing in his sixth straight World Championships, thrived in the hot and humid conditions, working his way through the field from the halfway point to make up eight places over the final 15 kilometres to cross in a season’s best time of 2:37:26 SB for 24th place.
It continues a superb run of consistent performances at world level for the Finn Valley athlete, finishing one place ahead of his 25th at the World Championships in Oregon last year.
Today’s 35k Race Walk medals went to Álvaro Martín (ESP) 2:24:30 NR, Brian Daniel Pintado (ECU) 2:24:34 AR, Masatora Kawano, and (JPN) 2:25:12 SB.

Day 6 Evening Session – Thursday
Brian Fay will go in round one of the 5,000m later this evening (6pm) where he will look to try and work his way into the first eight qualifying places in a stacked looking first heat which includes leading favourites Mohamed Katir (ESP) and Nicholas Kipkorir (KEN).
The Dubliner produced the race of his life last month to break the record of Alistair Cragg in 13.01.40 and a similar effort will be needed once more if the Raheny star is to make it into Sunday’s final.
Mark English was badly hampered in his 800m heat on Tuesday, but the Finn Valley athlete ran a huge race to get back up for 4th place in a season’s best of 1:45:71 which will see him back on track this evening at 8.08pm.
English will also face a huge challenge in trying to advance to the medal decider with only the first two in each heat qualifying alongside the next 2 fastest (q). The Finn Valley athlete is a championships performer, and a bold showing can be expected.
