Flurry of champions in sunny Santry
There was a whole host of champions at the Irish Life Health Combined Events Championships and the second day of the U20 Athletics Championships in Morton Stadium this weekend (September 12/13).
The senior heptathlon and decathlon over the course of the weekend saw Karen Dunne (Bohermeen) win the senior women’s title with 4,095 points while Rolus Olusa (Clonliffe Harriers) won the senior men’s title with 6,400 points. Full results are HERE
Anna McCauley (City of Lisbur) impressed to win the U20 women’s hepathlon as did Bandon’s Diarmuid O’Connor for the men’s decathlon with 6,807 points.
The masters were in good form too with W40-49 pentathlon gold for Erika Juozapaite (Blackrock Louth) with 2,824 points and W50 quadrathlon gold for Shirley Fennelly (Tramore) with 1,947 points.
The M35 pentathlon went to Martin Mooney (Inishowen) with 1,963 points, the M40-49 pentathlon to Garret Nolan (Lusk) on 1,691 points and M50 quadrathlon gold to Paschal Halley with 2,580 points.
Sunday (today) also saw some great U20 performances with championship best performances by Aimee Hayde (Newport) and Louis O’Loughlin (Donore Harriers) in respective 800m races. Strong running from the front saw them run 2:08.43 and 1:50.
Siobhan Whelan (Clonmel) won a good 3,000m from Joanne Loftus (Moy Valley) in 10:02.48 to 10:03.22. Tadhg Donnelly (Drogheda & District) won the men’s race in 8:34.15.
The hurdles races saw Tara Meier win the women’s 100m hurdles in 16.40 and Seren O’Toole (Galway City Harriers) the 400m hurdles in 64.88.
Nelvin Appiah (Longford) won the U20 men’s 110m hurdles in 14.55 and Conor Hoade (Galway City Harriers) won the 400m hurdles in 56.78.
Aoife O’Sullivan (Liscarroll) won the women’s high jump with 1.70m and Geoffrey Joy O’Regan (Sun Hill Harriers) cleared 1.96m for U20 men’s gold.
Triple Jump
Aisling MacHugh (Naas) and Richard Kamsen (Galway City Harriers) won the triple jump titles with respective best jumps of 11.54m and 13.66m.
Orla Coffey (Carraig-na-Bhfear) continued her fine form in the pole vault with a winning clearance of 3.50m while Leevale’s Conor Callinan won the men’s crown with a best of 4.30m
