FORDE AND FRAWLEY CROWNED NATIONAL SENIOR INDOOR COMBINED EVENT CHAMPIONS

Jack Forde (St. Killian’s A.C.) and Laura Frawley (Nenagh Olympic) were crowned this year’s national senior combined events champions at the 123.ie National Indoor Combined Event Championships which concluded at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena this afternoon (Jan 12th).

Forde made it three-in-a-row in the men’s heptathlon, overtaking overnight leader Lorcan Murphy (DSD) thanks to a strong showing in the pole vault which ultimately saw the defending champion retain his title by 36 points on a total of 4730 PB.

It marked Forde’s 5th national combined events title in all, with 3 in the heptathlon and two coming via the decathlon.

Lorcan Murphy led up until the final two events but would ultimately have to settle for silver on the back of his superb personal best performance of 4692. Emmanuel Osas of Ratoath AC rounded out the podium, posting personal best of his own in with 4163 points.

Laura Frawley (Nenagh Olympic) was a dominant winner in today’s pentathlon, amassing a total score of 3252 ahead of Louise King in second on 2654. Frawley outscored her competitors on all but one event (800m), with impressive scoring in 60mH (832) and high jump (765) moving her well clear of her rivals.

AAI GAMES (Saturday Jan 11th)

The AAI Games opened the national indoor season on Saturday January 11th. There was also the first national championship medals of the year on offer with Dundrum South Dublin AC claiming the inaugural mixed 4x400m indoor senior championship title with a winning time of 3:50.11 ahead of DSD (B) and Mayo AC.

Sprints action got the proceedings underway with winning performances in the 60m from Bori Akinola (UCD AC) 6.72 and Sarah Leahy (Killarney Valley AC) 7.35.

Marcus Lawler clocked the fastest 200m of the day with 21.22, while Kate O’Connell (Lucan Harriers AC) also impressed over 200m in clocking 24.40.

Paris Olympian Kate O’Connor was back in action over the hurdles, posting a winning time of 8.37PB as she builds towards another huge season in the heptathlon. Adam Nolan (St. L. O’Toole AC) was best of the men over the hurdles with a best of 8.02.

There were several impressive performances over the longer distances with winning runs from 1500m Maisy O’Sullivan (St. Abbans AC), 3000m Amy O’Donoghue (Dundrum South Dublin AC) 9:46.10, and 800m Freya Bateman (Belgooly AC) 2:10.82.

There was another superb display of jumping from Craughwells Conor Penney (2.05m) and Liscarroll’s Aoife O’Sullivan (1.78m) in the high jump, while Colm Bourke (7.27m) and Tiffany Nwaedozie (5.60m) were best of the long jumpers on the day.

There was best clearance of 4.60m for Matthew Callinan Keenan in the pole vault as he builds up to another tilt at the national indoor title next month, while Michaela Walsh looks to be returning to her best following a strong showing in the women’s shot.
