Some of the future stars of Irish athletics delivered excellent performances on Day Two of the 123.ie National Juvenile Track and Field Championships which took place at Tullamore Harriers Stadium today (July 21st).
The walks, 400m, 100m, 3000m and a number of field events dominated the action-packed programme at the Offaly venue.
Ireland’s fastest juvenile athletes were crowned following some exhilarating 100m finals which concluded the programme.
Fatima Amusan (Leevale AC) showed her class to win the Girls U19 title in 12.12 seconds, while Lemar Lucciano (West Coast AC) broke the 11-second barrier, clocking 10.96 seconds to win the Boys U18 event.
No doubt inspired by the exploits of their clubmate Rhasidat Adeleke, Gloria Oigbochie (Girls U18) and Sean O’Donnell (Boys U17) won their respective 100m finals. O’Donnell’s winning time of 10.74 obliterated the championship record.
Sean Doggett (Athenry AC) was the star performer across the day over 400m. The Galway man who represented Ireland in the 4x400m Relay at the European Senior Championships last month took gold in 48.57 seconds. Amy-Jo Kierans (Oriel AC) took the U19 Girls title in 56.03.
Andrew Hayes (Dundrum South Dublin AC) broke 50 seconds to win the Boys U18 title, while Roisin Murray (Bray Runners AC) won the Girls U17 event in 56.62.
There was no shortage of talent on display as athletes took to the track for the 3000m. Charlie O’Neill (Donore Harriers AC) broke the championship record in the U16 Boys race, crossing the line in a time of 9:00.08, while Emer McKee (Willowfield Harriers) triumphed in the Girls U17 race in an impressive 10:18.60.
Aoife Tuthill (Bandon AC) won the Girls U19 3000m Race Walk, while John Glennon (Mullingar Harriers) showed his class to win the Boys U18 5000m Race Walk title.
In the U14 Girls 2000m Race Walk the Tuam AC trio of Cuisle O’Callaghan (gold), Teagan Rooney (silver) and Roisin Steede Duffy (bronze) took an impressive clean sleep of medals.
In the field, Corey Scanlan (Finisk Valley AC) was a big winner of the Boys U19 Hammer Throw, with a best effort of 53.62m.
Poppi Devereaux (Youghal AC) cleared 3.00m to win the Girls U19 Pole Vault, Blaine Lynch (Finn Valley AC) won the Boys U19 Javelin, Eoin Boyle (Tír Chonaill AC) took Boys High Jump gold in the age group, while Cian Flynn (Corran AC) won the Boys U19 Triple Jump.
The National Juvenile Championships conclude next Saturday (July 27th).
