GIDEY SMASHES IRISH 10,000M RECORD IN CALIFORNIA

30 March 2025

Efrem Gidey

Efrem Gidey (Clonliffe Harriers AC) has smashed the Irish senior 10,000m record overnight in America.

The 24-year-old clocked a time of 27:26.95 at The Ten meeting in San Juan Capistrano, California, to knock 13 seconds off the previous national record that had been held by Alistair Cragg since 2007.

Gidey finished 12th in the race which was won by Ishmael Kipkurui of Kenya in 26:50.21.

If this record is officially ratified, it will top off a wonderful six months for Gidey, who has also broken Irish records over 10km road (27:43) and the half marathon (60:51) in recent times.

Former national senior Cross Country champion Cormac Dalton (Mullingar Harriers AC) was also competing at the meet, finishing 13th in an earlier 10,000m race in 28:33.92.
