Death of Dr Kevin O’Flanagan

The death has taken place today 26th May of Dr Kevin O'Flanagan ( born 10th June 1919 ). Kevin had a celebrated career in sport representing Ireland in soccer and rugby as well as distinguishing himself as an athlete in the sprints and long jump. While in UCD studying medicine Kevin won the Irish ( NACA ) 100 yards ( 10.1 secs ) in 1941 as well as the long jump ( 21ft11.5 ins ) in 1939 and tied with the late great Dave Guiney in 1941 in 22ft 6 ins. Kevin later went on to an illustrious career in sports administration contributing significantly on a national and international level in sports medicine . He became a member of the International Olympic Committee at the Montreal Olympics in 1976 and served as a member of the IOC's medical commission from 1980 to 1994.Kevin became an honorary member of thr IOC in 1995. Dr Kevin O'Flanagan was a great friend to Irish athletics making a noteworthy contribution to the sport over many years as Chief Medical Officer.His own professional expertise and the many contacts he had helped many an injured athlete. Athletics Ireland wishes to express its sympathy to the family of Dr Kevin on their great loss and to all in Irish sport on the passing of a genuine sporting hero.
