Sean Aigboboh (Tallaght AC) broke the Irish 200m record last week in Texas, clocking a blistering time of 20.27 seconds (+2.0m/s).
Competing at the Cameron Burrell Alumni Invitational the 20-year-old Dubliner dipped under the previous national record of 20.30 seconds which had been held by Paul Hession since 2007, while the run obliterated Robert McDonnell’s Irish U23 record (20.51) for the event.
It continued a fine outdoor season for the University of Houston student, who has also set a personal best of 10.27 seconds for 100m in recent weeks.
Aigboboh made the final of the 100m at the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru and was part of the Irish men’s 4x100m relay team who broke the national record last summer at the European Athletics Team Championships in Maribor, Slovenia.
Elsewhere, at the ESET WMD-Night meet in Milan, Italy, Ally Duffy (Tullamore Harriers) broke the Irish U18 2000m Steeplechase clocking a time of 6:45.00. Lucie Cawley (Sligo AC), the previous record holder, also dipped under her old best (6:48.84) running a time of 6:45.23.
