Sheehan's emotional victory

The Irish Life Health National Intermediate Cross Country Championships and Juvenile Cross Country Relays delivered some passionate displays at the Palace Grounds in Tuam, Galway today (January 22).

Niall Sheehan (Gowran) was an emotional men’s winner in the men’s 8,000m from Colin Maher (Ballyfin) in second and Ian Guiden (Clonliffe Harriers).

Sheehan has been a dedicated club athlete down through the years and his celebration at the finish was evocative to what must be one of his sweetest victories. The Gowran man has been a top 20 performer at national cross country championships and this was his moment to be a hero for a day.

Colin Maher has been producing some good performances on the road and he backed up that form with a fine second place while Ian Guiden continued his return to top form in third and guided his club Clonliffe Harriers, and Dublin, to team titles. North Belfast Harriers were second and North Sligo third in the club competition with Antrim second and Galway third on home turf in the county.

Aoife Cooke (Youghal) added the intermediate 5,000m title to the novice title she won last year in Dungarvan. She got the better of Sinead Tangney (Sportsworld) in second and Rachel Gibson (North Down) in third. The roles were reversed in the club competition with Sportsworld coming out on top with Youghal in second and Mayo AC in third. Cork won the county ahead of Dublin in second and Mayo in third.

The Juvenile Inter Club relays got the day off to an exciting start with Ratoath excelling placing in three of the four races. They won the U12 girls, were second in the U14 girls behind a strong Galway City Harriers team and were second in the U14 boys behind Sherock. Nenagh Olympic came out on top in the U12 boys relay.
