Another day of thrilling performances The second weekend of the Woodie’s DIY Juvenile Indoor championships produced a re-run of all the excitement and excellence of the previous weekend. Several of last week’s competitors returned to contest a second event and the result was some enthralling contests. The boys under 19 800m was as exciting and interesting a race as you will get. Last week’s 400m winner Fergal Ellis moved up in distance and 1,500m winner Keith Maher moved down a distance to race over 800m. Maher did all the work in front but was overtaken with just over a lap to go by Ellis. A great battle ensued to the finish with Ellis holding on for a superb win. Darren McBrearty fell twice in last week’s under 18 1,500m, but, in today’s 800m there were no such obstacles to his progress. He was in total control throughout and crossed the line a comfortable winner for his first national title. Ciara Everard was again a class apart in the under 19 800m, dipping under 2:10 once again. Her winning time was a new CBP eclipsing Geraldine McCarthy’s 1997 record of 2:14.98. Other CPB’s were set by Barry Pender who won the under 19 high jump with a 2:10m clearance. Paul Scanlon, who is based in Essex and whose family hail from Macroom, set new figures for the under 16 800m. Cathriona Farrell who cleared 1.75m in the under 17 high jump. Emma Prendiville who easily won the under 16 1,500m walk. Kate Veale who did likewise in the under 15 1,000m walk. The Neville twins may look alike but it took the photo finish camera to separate them in the under 16 800m as they both crossed the line in the same time. The camera decided that Jessica was slightly ahead of Christine. Craig Lynch was a clear winner of the under19 200m, adding to the 60m title of last week. Niamh Whelan did likewise in the under 19 girls 200m, winning with plenty to spare. Joan Healy also completed the 60m and 200m double, while Dara Kervick added the 200m to last week’s 400m win.
