The core objective of Athletics Ireland High Performance Plan which was published in 2013 is to have “More Irish Athletes Winning on the World Stage”. The creation of the High Performance Systems which is International best practice supports athlete’s progression along the performance matrix resulting in more consistent delivery of performances at major championships and creates more medal opportunities. Investment is made in those athletes who provide the greatest opportunity of delivering performances and medals now and into the future based on their performance level to date and performance potential.

Kevin Ankrom (High Performance Director)

Kevin Ankrom, High Performance Director commented “The 2015 carding Scheme will have a strong focus on an  identified group of  athletes who have the ability to continue to progress competing on the world stage in 2015 and to deliver strong performances at Rio Olympics in 2016. While appropriate supports will be given to the next generation to allow them to deliver at key championships in 2015 with a long term objective of delivering performances of note in 2020 Olympics”.

There was a total investment of €879,000 in 88 athletes supported by the 2014 High Performance carding scheme.  This investment was made up of cash grants and Support Services (covering medical, physiotherapist and soft tissue services in addition to the services of physiologists, nutritionists and strength and conditioning experts).  It also covered travel and accommodation for major International competition from youth through to senior athletes. In addition athletes were supported to attend altitude and warm weather camps and to travel to key competitions which are seen as integral in preparation for major championships.

This investment supported athletes to deliver one of Ireland’s best performances at European Athletics Championships in Zurich in August with Mark English bronze medal in the 800m being the highlight performance while Paul Robinson narrowly missed out on a podium position with fourth place in the 1500m. There was also four finalists, five top 10 finishes and two Irish records and three personal bests set.
