Behan narrowly misses out on European final

There was agony and ecstasy for Matthew Behan (Crusaders) as he just missed out on a place in the final of the 110m hurdles at the European U23 Championships in Bydgoszcz today (July 14).

The young Dubliner stormed out of the blocks in the first heat of the 110m hurdles and was leading at the halfway stage before being pipped on the line for second recording the same time of 14.14 seconds – a new personal best. He was pipped by one thousandth of a second by Czech athlete David Sklenar.

“I’m delighted to PB today with 14.14, said Behan afterwards. It was bittersweet to miss the final by 0.001 on a photo finish verdict. However, I will learn from this amazing experience.” You can watch a video interview with Matthew Behan on the Athletics Ireland Facebook page HERE.

Andrew Mellon (Crusaders) equalled his season’s best for the third time in the semi-finals of the 400m finishing 8th in his section in 47.32.

Round 1, straight semi-finals, of the women’s 400m saw Jenna Bromell (Emerald) and Sophie Becker (St Joseph’s) run out with respective times of 54.32 and 54.99.
