Silver lining for Ireland at Schools Combined Events
Ireland won four silver medals at the annual SIAB Schools Combined Events Championships which was held in the Athlone International Indoor Arena for the first time yesterday (Decmeber 10).
The team took two individual silver, as well as two team silvers and one team bronze which was held in Athlone for the first time ever to celebrate the centenary of Irish schools athletics.
With only the 800m remaining it was all up for grabs in the under and over 16 boys competitions. In the over 16 competition, Tony Odubote from Ennis moved from third to second place while England’s Toby Seal lost his lead to Joel McFarlane of Scotland. McFarlane was the only non-English winner on the day.
In the team stakes, Ireland finished third behind England and Scotland. The Under 16 boys team won silver with Diarmuid O’Connor just missing out on individual bronze by two points with all four team members inside the top ten.
Best of the girls was Anna McCauley who finished second over 16. The Irish girls packed well to take team silver. England won all four team titles.
