Michaela Walsh (Swinford) highlighted an excellent day of competition in soaring temperatures at the U20 and U23 Championships with a women’s U23 hammer record in Tullamore Harriers’ stadium today (June 30).
Walsh had an excellent throw of 64.57m to break her previous record of 64.22m set 13 days ago at the England U23 Championships in Bedford.
It was a busy day for the Swinford thrower who also won gold in the shot put with 15.06m and two silvers in the javelin and weight for distance. Walsh threw 41.48m in the javelin behind Elizabeth Morland’s (Cushinstown) 44.25m and 6.20m in the wfd behind Seodhna Hoey’s (Portlaoise) new record of 6.79m.
Multi-event star Elizabeth Morland bagged three golds in total adding the long jump in 6.07m and the 100m hurdles in 13.70 to her U23 javelin title.
Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght) sprinted to gold in the U20 100m in 11.83 ahead of Molly Scott (St. L. O'Toole) in 11.91 and Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn) in 12.02. Ciara Neville (Emerald) took U20 200m gold in 24.36.
Israel Olatunde (Dundealgan) was a good winner of the U20 men's 100m in 10.73 with Reality Osouha (Fingallians) winning the 200m in 21.78.
Ciara Deely (Kilkenny City Harriers) was a good winner of the U20 women’s 400m in 55.41. The 800m saw an exciting battle between Jo Keane (Ennis Track) and Sophie O’Sullivan (Ballymore Cobh). O’Sullivan was a reluctant leader through the bell in 72 seconds with Keane tracking her as the pace heated up on the last lap.
Keane passed O’Sullivan rounding the curve into the home straight to win in 2:14.49 to 2:15.66.
The race of the day was a tactical U20 men’s 1500m where Darragh McElhinney (Bantry) ran a blistering last 250m to beat his rival Charlie O’Donovan (Leevale) in 4:17.29 to 4:18.11.
Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley) took one jump to win the U20 women’s high jump with a clearance of 1.70m.
James Kelly (Finn Valley) won the U20 men’s shot with 16.83m, Brendan O'Donnell (Lifford Strabane AC) won the U20 hammer with 64.32, Ryan Carthy Walsh (Adamstown A.C.) won the U20 High Jump with 2.00m, and Niamh Fogarty (North Westmeath A.C.) won the U20 women’s Discus with 46.57m.
Orla O'Connor (Waterford) and Niamh O'Connor (Celbridge) were first and second in the junior women's 3,000m race walk in 13:20.08 and 14:17.19 respectively.
Toye Adeyeye (Sli Cualann) caused a stir in the U23 men’s 100m winning in 10.75 with Craig Newell (Ballymena & Antrim) winning the U23 200m in 21.67.
Roisin Harrison (Emerald) won the U23 women’s 200m in 24.67.
Matthew Behan (Crusaders A.C.) had a busy day running five races in total bagging gold in the U23 men’s 110m Hurdles title in 14.20 along with gold in the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay along with fourth in the 200m.
Adam King (Iveragh A.C.) won the U23 men’s hammer with 62.87m where there was a series of fine performances throughout the day.
