NCAA Cross Country Championships and IUAA Road Relays highlight weekend

Five Irish athletes will compete for their respective colleges in the 79th NCAA Division 1 Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana tomorrow afternoon (November 19).

Clonmel’s Sean Tobin will compete for Ole Mississippi along with Ballina’s Hugh Armstrong and Clonliffe Harriers’ Aaron Hanlon (both Providence) in the men’s race. Tobin helped Ole Mississippi to the South Region Conference last week and he will be hoping they can get amongst the team medals in Indiana.

Meawhile Finn Valley’s Sarah Collins (Providence) and DSD’s Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Villanova) will be hoping to help their respective colleges get on the podium. Providence are stewarded by long-time coach Ray Treacy of Waterford – brother of Olympic silver medallist and CEO of Sport Ireland John Treacy.

Closer to home the Irish Universities (IUAA) Road Relay Championships will take place in Maynooth tomorrow with Mark English in line to run a one mile leg for UCD in the men’s race – a 1-2-3-2-1 mile format. The women’s race takes place at 12:45 with a 1-2-2-1 mile format. UCD and DCU have dominated the event in recent times but expect the likes of UL, UCC and Athlone IT to make strong challenges. UL’s men look set to have Eoin Everard and Niall Tuohy amongst their ranks.

Further afield Paul Pollock runs in the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon on Sunday November 20 which includes Kenya’s Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge. This will be the third time they have raced each other in the last 13 months.
