King shines for Ireland on day one of winter throws
After the first day of competition at The European Winter Throws Cup in Gran Canaria, Ireland’s Adam King (Iveragh) was the star performer in the green vest.
Despite a hammer circle that was like glass, where many other athletes were slipping, Adam produced a personal best by 2 metres for a throw of 61.56m. Adam was very happy with his performance afterwards but felt that there is lots more room for improvement over the coming season. He was particularly happy to be able to compete at this level of competition and learn from the world class performers in this Under 23 field.
Eoin Sheridan (North Westmeath) was the other standout performer on day one in the Under 23 Discus. Eoin was just shy of his recent personal best with 51.76m. Like King, Sheridan looked very comfortable at this high level of competition and he looks certain to progress over the coming months.
Michaela Walsh (Swinford) threw the Shot Put 14.79m but never found her rhythm as often happens in early season competitions. Marco Pons (DMP) with 48.79m in the Men’s Discus will be disappointed after a good preparation at home.
Tomorrow, Ireland have Padraig White (Dunboyne) in the Men’s Hammer, Michaela Walsh goes in hammer and John Kelly (Finn Valley) and Irish vest debutante Stephen Rice (Sli Cualann) go in the Shot Put and Javelin.
