Olusa soars to Combined Events title
Rolus Olusa (Clonliffe Harriers) continued his good form this indoor season to win the senior men’s Irish Life Health National Combined Events title while Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown) captured the women’s crown in Athlone IT today (January 18).
Olusa turned over Shane Aston (Trim) to win the men’s crown with 3,584 points and stop the Meath man’s streak of national multi-events titles.
The Clonliffe Harrier started well to edge the 60m hurdles in 8.41 seconds and won the high jump (1.93m), shot put (11.29m), and long jump 6.69m. He only just conceded in the 1,000m in second in 3:00.50 to Aston’s 2:59.00.
Elizabeth Morland affirmed her favourite tag in the senior women’s winning the 60m hurdles in 8.83 seconds, high jump (1.73m), shot put (10.74m) and long jump (5.61m). She had to settle for fourth in the 800m in 2:32.76 but had enough spare over Laura Frey (Lagan Valley) who was second overall with 3,239 points. Morland tallied 3,806 points for the gold.
Laura Frawley (St Mary’s Limerick) and Anna Ryan (Moycarkey Coolcroo) took good wins in the Youth and U20 women’s Combined Events. Frawley scored 3,473 points with Ryan totalling 3,221 points.
Finn O’Neill (Lifford Strabane) was impressive winning the U16 boys’ title with 3,511 points while Joseph McEvoy (Nenagh Olympic) won a competitive U20 men’s event with 3,747 points.
In the masters, there was a number of good winners including Nichola Tighe (Waterford) W40 with 2,580 points and Trevor McGlynn (Omagh Harriers) M40 with 2,945 points.
