SILVER FOR KATE O’CONNOR AT COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Kate O'Connor has claimed a heptathlon silver medal for Team Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this evening (Aug 3rd). O'Connor amassed a total of 6233 points which included 3 personal bests over the two day event schedule (only 64 points off her NR).

O’Connor (21) set personal bests in the opening 100m hurdles and 200m on day one, combined with a solid high jump and shot put meant O’Connor went into day two second behind defending champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

O’Connor dropped to fifth after the long jump, before a 51.14m javelin moved her to 5337 points, behind the lead of 5469.

The Dundalk  St Gerards athlete would finish 4th in the final event, the 800m, securing her silver medal. The gold went the way of Johnson-Thompson with her 6377 points.

Anna McCauley finished 6th following a 2.19.16 800m, finishing with a total of 5426 points (only 114 points off her PB).
