TEAM IRELAND SET FOR A BUSY DAY 1 AT EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

POSTED:

Ten Irish athletes will make their first appearances at the 2022 European Athletics Championships in Munich tomorrow (Aug 15th).

Four-time Olympian Fionnuala McCormack heads up a strong women’s marathon team (ranked 4th) which includes Aoife Cooke and Ann Marie McGlynn in the first of the medal events on day 1. The trio will take to the start line in Munich city centre from 9.30am. McCormack will have eyes on the leading positions with her personal best of 2:23:58 from 2021 ranking 2nd fastest among the entries.

Hugh Armstrong will go in the men’s marathon from 10.30am and comes into the race ranked 30th on a season’s best of 2.14.04.

The first member of team Ireland in action on day one will be Irish record holder Eric Favors in the shot put qualifying round. Favors will go in ‘Group A’ with the first throws set to take to the air from 9.00am. Favors is likely to need one of his lifetime best throws to make it through to this evening’s final (7.58pm).

Irish sprint star Israel Olatunde will make his European outdoor debut (senior) in the heats of the 100m at 9.56am. Olatunde’s PB of 10.24 is just .06 off the Irish 100m record and he will likely need to threaten that once more to progress.

Phil Healy returns for her 4th senior European championships having debuted in Zurich 8 years ago. Healy (6.35pm) and Sharlene Mawdsley (6.53pm) go in the heats of the 400m, with Sophie Becker now turning her focus fully to the 4x400m relay later in the week.

Rhasidat Adeleke advances to Tuesday’s semi-final as one of the top 12 ranked athletes (ranked 6th), as does Chris O’Donnell in the men’s 400m. O’Donnell comes into this week as the top ranked Irish athlete (5th), and the Olympic & World relay finalist has made no secret that another major final is his target.

Rounding out day 1 for team Ireland will be recent 1000m record breaker Luke McCann (7.15pm) who will be joined in the heats of the 1500m by Tokyo Olympian Andrew Coscoran (7.26pm), with both looking to make Thursday’s final.
