Wright battles to 31st in men’s 20km race walk

Alex Wright (Leevale) battled to a 31st place finish in 1:37:33 in the men’s 20km race walk in testing conditions along the Corniche at the IAAF World Athletics Championships (October 5).

Wright started conservatively in a bid to come through the field after preparing in relatively similar conditions in Spain but alas it was to no avail.

"It was just a struggle," said Wright afterwards. “I tried to go out a little slowly but it didn’t help,” he said disconsolately.

The Leevale athlete, the third last Irish athlete in action, worked right through to the end around the 1km loop in humid conditions under glaring spotlights surrounded by darkness on the waterfront.

Ciara Mageean (City of Lisburn) in the women's 1500m final and Stephen Scullion (Clonliffe Harriers) in the men's marathon are the final Irish competitors in action.
