Scott continues medal rush with brilliant bronze in Tbilisi

Molly Scott (St Laurence O’Toole) continued the Irish medal rush at the European Youth Championships in Tbilisi today (July 16) with a magnificent bronze in the girls’ 100m hurdles final in 13.51 seconds.

Scott was in sizzling form at the championships setting national youth records in the heats and the semi-finals – her 13.32 in the semis was the second fastest run of the championships. Italy’s Desola Oki won the final in 13.30 with Viktoryia Zakharchuk (Belarus) second in 13.48.

Alex Clarkin (Donore Harriers) was also in excellent hurdling form at the championships setting two new national youths records. He finished 8th in the 110m hurdles final in 14.14 – just outside his 13.96 record.

Kevin McGrath (Bohermeen) continued his progress by making the 800m final finishing second in semi-final 2 in 1:51.03. Rory Lodge (Kilkenny City Harriers) was 6th in semi-final 1 in 1:56.28 and was ranked 13th overall.

Aaron Sexton (North Down) finished 4th in semi-final 3 of the 200m in 21.89 while Aoife Lynch (Donore Harriers) was 6th in semi-final 1 of the girls’ 200m in a PB of 24.56. Janine Boyle (Finn Valley) was 8th in semi-final 2 of the 200m in 25.08. Unfortunately Arlene Crossan (Finn Valley) had to withdraw from the girls’ 400m hurdles semi-finals due to injury.

Gearoid McMahon (Shannon) finished 20th in boys 10k Race Walk final in 53:38.62 while Darragh Gaffney (North Westmeath) was 14th in Group A of the discus with 48.39m.

Daniel Ryan (Moycarkey Coolcroo)had a busy day 1 in the boys’ decathlon in the 100m (11.23), long jump (6.83m), shot put 13.79m), high jump (1.78m) and 400m (52.18).

Final day of action will see Ryan complete the decathlon, Kevin McGrath in the 800m final and Emma O’Brien (Sli Cualann) in the girls’ 1500m final.
