A group of Irish athletes headed to Bedford for the English Athletics U20/U23 Championships in a year when the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregan in July is the priority. Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dundrum South Dublin AC) once again dipped under the B-standard (4.28.00) by finishing fifth in a time of 4.27.03 in the 1,500m final. This is the third time this year that Buttner has achieved the standard having recorded times of 4.25.43 and 4.27.02 earlier in the season.

John Kelly (Finn Valley AC) placed third in the Shot Putt with a throw of 17.05m. Sam Healy (Leevale AC) placed one better in the long jump leaping out to a distance of 7.51m. However the wind reading was +4.0 so the mark won’t count for personal best purposes.  Healy also recorded a time of 14.41 in the 110m hurdles.  Alice Akers (Scariff AC) threw a seasons best of 53.01m to finish third in the hammer event.

800m

Aislinn Crossey (Newry AC) and Alanna Lally (Galway City Harriers AC) both qualified for the final of the U20 800m where they placed fifth (2.07.77) and eight (2.09.13) respectively. Katie Kirk (Lagan Valley AC) dominated the women’s U23 800m to win the title with a time of 2.02.78.

3 in the final of the 200m

There were three Irish athletes represented in the final of the U20 women’s 200m final. Cliodhna Manning (Kilkenny City Harriers AC) was the best of them placing sixth in a time of 24.57 with Niamh McNicol (Ferrybank AC) seventh in a time of 24.72 and Roisin Harrison (Emerald AC) third in a time of 24.57.

Hurdles & High Jump

Megan Marrs (City of Lisburn AC) excelled in the U20 100m hurdles running a time of 14.10 to place second. Sarah Murray (Fingallians AC) placed eight in the final of the U23 100m in a time of 12.02 (+3.5).  In the U20 high jump Jamie Murtagh (St Andrews AC) finished fourth with a clearance of 2.08m and in the women’s event Neasa Murphy (Ferrybank AC) placed eight after clearing 1.65m.

There were a number of other Irish athletes competing who didn’t quite make it to the finals; a full set of results can be viewed HERE
