The Irish Life Health National League Final capped the domestic track and field season with St Abbans women and Clonliffe Harriers men repeating history as the overall premier winners in Tullamore today (August 19th), with some good individual performances key in helping their clubs build their overall scores in the Club League.
Saragh Buggy (Long Jump and Triple Jump), Nicole Kehoe Dowling (Discus and Shot Putt) and Ruby Millet (100m and 200m), who each won two events, led the Laois club to a great victory in the Women’s Premier Division ahead of Galway County and Dundrum South Dublin. St. Abbans really shone in the Women’s Premier Division, winning nine events in total.
In Division One County Monaghan Women came out on top, gaining 101 points in total. City of Derry just edged City of Lisburn into third with only one point between them at 88 and 89 points. Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn A.C.), who was part of the 4x100m Irish relay team winning silver in a new national U20 record World U20 Athletics Champs in Tampere last month was in action, coming out on top in the Division 1 Women’s 200m in 24.52, claiming an impressive nine points for her club.
The field eventers scored key points for Clonliffe Harriers with Niall Counihan in the Triple Jump, Keith Marks in the Long Jump, Simon Galligan in the Hammer and Stephan Rice in the Javelin. Stephan has had a great season, throwing a new personal best and national under-23 record of 75.89 in the javelin at the Morton Games last month. Clonliffe, who have won nine championships in eleven years, edged Galway City Harriers into second and Kildare County into third position. Sean Breathnach was in action once again for Galway City Harriers, throwing 15.47m on his second attempt in the Premier Men’s Shot Putt and throwing 8.20m in the Men's Weight for Distance competition. He also claimed four Titles yesterday at the Irish Life Health Master Championships.
Although DSD didn’t place in the top three in the Premier Men’s Division, Sean Roth (Dundrum South Dublin) gave the stand-out performance of the day when he sailed over 5.00m in the Premier Men’s Pole Vault at the Nationals this afternoon. He is in fine form this year after setting a new U23 Irish Pole Vault record of 5.10 at a meet in Soest, Germany in June.
Nenagh Olympic A.C. were the best men’s team in Division One ahead of Kerry County in second and St. Laurence O’Toole third. Marcus Lawler (St Laurence O’Toole A.C.) bowed out in the heats of the 200m, after finishing fifth in 20.80 seconds at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin earlier this month. Lawler battled it out today with Travane Morrison (Kerry County) in the Division One Men’s 200m, winning in an impressive time of 20.74 scoring key points for SLOT but Travane came back to win the 100m later in the day, leaving Lawler to settle for second.
