Three Irish athletes were in action at the star-studded Gateshead Diamond League meet yesterday, May 23rd.

Sarah Healy lined up in a stacked women’s 1500m race which was won by Laura Muir (GB). Healy raced patiently throughout in what were seriously tough weather conditions to secure a brilliant 4th place finish in 4:09:62. It ranked as the 2nd fastest time of her career, just .67s outside her lifetime best.  Healy finished strongly and claimed a number of places on the final lap, gaining 140 placing points towards Tokyo as a result.

Clonmel AC athlete Sean Tobin also excelled in the wind and rain of Gateshead, clocking a personal best in the 5,000m with a 13.33.93. Tobin battled on for 12th place in a world class field which saw Katir of Spain claim first place in 13.08.

Nessa Cooper Millet was also in action in the womens 400mH, finishing in 6th place in a time of 59.00 in what were anything but ideal hurdling conditions.

A number of elite athletes also made the trip to the hugely successful City of Lisburn Meet over the weekend. The men’s 800m proved to be one of the races of the meet with Harry Purcell (Trim AC), Andrew Coscoran (Star of the Sea AC), and Roland Surlis (Annalee) all clocking under 1:47:00. The PB performance from Purcell in 1:46:83 secured the win.

Recent World Relay 2nd place finishers Kate Doherty (Dundrum South Dublin) and Sarah Quinn (St Colmans South Mayo AC) continued their stunning start to the 2021 outdoor season with a closely contested women’s 100m. Quinn just pipped her international teammate with time of 11.85. Doherty would go on the claim the 200m in 24:20 from Sarah McCarthy of Mid Sutton AC.

Robert McDonnell (Galway AC) secured the U20 European standard with an ultra impressive 47.98 in the men's 400m.

Multiple national hurdle champion Gerard O’Donnell looked in sparkling form in the 110m hurdles, clocking 14.03 (1.7) which was only 0.16 off his PB from 6 years ago.

Ellie Harnett (UCD A.C) impressed in securing first place in the women’s 1500m in 4:25:29 ahead of Siobhan Whelan of Clonmel (4:26:86).
